What is Happy Hands anyway?
Each fourth Wednesday of the month the Happy Hands group meets at 9:30am in the Conference Room to enjoy good fellowship as we stuff and sew heart pillows or knit or crochet items for patients at our community hospitals.
The small and large heart-shaped pillows are useful as a cough pillow during respiration therapy for patients following heart surgery and other surgeries, and also for breast cancer patients to protect their ports. The knitters and crocheters have made lovely scarves, hats and lap blankets for adults, children and babies.
Our very own Thelma Stockton sews together a large number of the “Common Threads” heart-shaped pillows. Thelma leaves a small section on one side of the pillows open. Then some of the Happy Hands group stuffs the pillows while others stitch together the small opening to finish off the pillows for delivery to the local hospitals.
The coordinator for our Happy Hands group is Doris Wright, who works with the Memorial Drive United Methodist “Common Threads” group to get many of the materials for the pillows as well as distribution to local hospitals. However, we also depend on our own church members for donations of materials or funds. For donations you can either contact Doris or leave items at the church office.
Already in 2014 the Happy Hands group have sewn 1000 heart pillows, stuffed 128 pillows, closed 113 pillows, and knitted 89 baby caps. Any of the heart pillows that Thelma has sewn for the month that are not stuffed and closed by our Happy Hands group are taken by Doris to the Town & Country Starbucks for the Memorial Drive United Methodist “Common Threads” group to complete.
Happy Hands will meet next on the fourth Wednesday – Sept 24 at 9:30 in the conference room.
