A Season of Peace

This Sunday, as is often the case, our Choral Response will be a canticle from a text in the second chapter of Luke, the Nunc Dimmitis, meaning ‘Now you dismiss.’
According to the narrative in Luke, Simeon was a devout Jew who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah.
When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of consecration of the firstborn son, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered these words:

Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace:
Your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;
A light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel!
As we usher in the Season of Peace, with Advent right on its heels, let us hold on to this promise:

In a fearful and broken world, Christ comes to make all things new- and to reveal God’s love to all nations! Alleluia, Amen!
