Did You Know? – Batteries

Posted on January 2, 2014

Did You KnowAt our PW Christmas Luncheon, Betty Dallman suggested we share some helpful hints with each other throughout the year. Therefore, during 2014, The SBPC Presbyterian Women will be including a Did You Know section each week on the website and monthly in the PresPress.

Here are suggestions from BuyBattery.com on how to store batteries safely:

  • Keep batteries in original packaging when possible.
  • Do not store new and used batteries together.
  • If a battery feels warm, it should be discarded.
  • Ideally, batteries should be stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Never store batteries at temperatures over 130 degrees F.
  • Remove batteries from equipment if it is not going to be used for 30 days or more.
  • Don’t remove plastic caps from 9V batteries until it is time to use them.
  • Don’t let the terminals of stored batteries come in contact with each other.

As Betty shared with us, if the terminals are in contact with each other, they may begin to conduct electricity idly. It is possible for the batteries to heat up and possibly cause a fire or, at a minimum, drain the battery. Storing batteries in their original package will help you prevent this. You can also buy battery storage boxes from specialty storage retailers that will eliminate this potential problem.
