Donations to Victims of Hurricane Harvey
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” – New International Version
We are so thankful for the way our church has been “taking care of our sheep,” both individually and as a group. Immediately our church members jumped into action no matter if it was taking a boat out to rescue people from flooded homes, donating food and clothing items to shelters, donating walkers and wheelchairs, donating toiletries then putting together kits for people in shelters, donating cleaning items and creating cleaning kits, gutting and cleaning flooded homes, opening their homes to those in need, preparing meals for workers, and offering free childcare to parents so they can focus on the task at hand.
We also graciously received about $4400 in donations to the Hurricane Harvey fund. With those funds our Missions Team:
- bought more cleaning supplies to create 29 additional cleaning kits, which were distributed to those in need
- helped to pay for tools, supplies and food for church members working in coordination with “Rugby Relief” in cleaning out homes
- assisting financially and physically with a church member whose first floor was completely flooded
- gave a gift card to two of our daycare teachers whose apartment roof caved in from the rain and lost much of what they owned
- gave a gift card to the family of a church member’s Little Sister (from the “Big Sister/Little Sister” program) that lost home and car
- gave a gift card to a Presbyterian pastor from a neighboring church whose home flooded
- gave money to 6 police officers and 4 staff members of Spring Valley Police Department, which is next door to our church, whose homes had all flooded while they were on duty but had been denied assistance by FEMA
- gave money to a Presbyterian church in Katy, Texas where 75% of the congregants and staff had flood damage, the church had about 1.5 feet of water in the church and pre-school buildings, and the church has 90 days to get the pre-school up to state standards or they will lose their license
- donated to Spring Branch Independent School District and Houston Independent School District to replace school supplies
- donated to Houston Food Bank
In addition, we will be focusing on replenishing the inventory for the Fairhaven Food Pantry and the East Spring Branch Food Pantry with our Cornucopia Challenge during the month of October as well as our normal Fairhaven Food Drive in November.
Many thanks go to all of you as we take care of each other.
