The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God
Kate Cross
The Gospel of Mark ends almost as abruptly as it starts.
The man in white, who the ladies presumed to be the gardener said, “… He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place that they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.”
And then it ends.
The same gospel starts with a verbless phrase: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Mark’s gospel wasn’t typeset and titled “The Gospel of Mark” from the get-go. That’s the title:
“The Beginning of the Good News”
What good news it is. From the calling of the disciples, the miracles, His patience with the disciples, to his journey from death to resurrection it is all good news, but it’s just the beginning.
Sure, we get a glimpse of the aftermath of the resurrection in the rest of the good news in the other gospels, in the alternative ending to Mark, and in the Acts of the Apostles but that’s not the end either. It continues though, it continues for two thousand and more years – the ups and downs of history and the path of God working in his people, being forever patient with us as we too live out the Good News and finally start to “get it.”
It’s the never ending story of God redeeming his people.
