Muscle Memory

The Word:  “Therefore, show…the proof of your love and reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.” — 2 Corinthians 8:24, NIV

Reflection:  Do you know how to ride a bicycle? Roller skate? Swim? Do you practice any of these every day?  Most of us probably do not ride a bike, roller skate or swim every day. But if you have ever learned to do these then chances are you haven’t forgotten how. This is called having developed ‘muscle memory’.

When I was 6 years old I received a quarter each month as an allowance.  It was so I could learn the practice of saving and tithing.  I was to give a nickel once a month during Sunday School and put a nickel in my piggy bank; the rest was mine to spend. God gives us enough to meet our needs and wants us to be wise about the use of our resources. Giving not only illustrates our faith to others, but increases our own spiritual strength. Practicing proportional giving and tithing create “spiritual muscle memory”. Setting a budget, putting God before yourself is hard if you haven’t practiced. Practice proportional giving or tithing, you will be amazed at the change in your life when you put God first in your finances.  Set a specific goal, be realistic about your self and your money. Make a commitment to God.  Read 2 Corinthians 8. If you already practice proportional giving or tithing, does this affect the way you spend your money?  What changes in your thinking do you need to make in order to practice greater generosity to God?

Pray: Dear God I desire for you to shape my soul into one that is fruitful, help me to learn to give and be generous. Amen.
