Pocket Change
The Word: Galatians 5:22-23, NSRV “…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…”
Reflection: The Academy at Spring Branch Presbyterian Church needed to rebuild the playground as a result of the construction of new The Gathering Place. The Academy Board decided that rather than ask parents or the congregation for more that the money would be raised in a different way. A 5 gallon empty water bottle was decorated with illustrations of children playing on a playground and a poster was made that showed the progress toward the goal of $3000. The project was called “Pennies for a Playground”. Over the course of the first few months the money slowly filled the bottle, but the ‘register’ did not move. One day I walked by the poster and saw that over $1500 had been collected and the bottle, which had been almost full, was now empty. This process continued and eventually more than enough money was raised to restore, improve and add new equipment to the play-ground. It was an easy and fun way to change the lives of the children who attend the Academy. Pocket change changed the lives of the children.
“Change the life of a child and you change the world.” What “small” ministries can you be a part of to change lives in our church, community, presbytery, nation, even the world? What change can you make in someone’s life this week?
Pray: Dear God, sometimes it seems that the needs are so large that there is nothing we can do to make a difference. Remind us that it only took one life to change the world, the life of your Son. Help me to remember that everything done in the name of Jesus will change lives, including my own. Amen.
