The Grace of Giving

The Word: “But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7, NIV

Reflection:   The simple facts are that without money and other resources the church can not fulfill its purpose.  However, living the real life of a Christian is more than budgets, programs and money. Practicing extravagant generosity is more than just using good principles of stewardship; it requires honest, frank discussions about proportional giving and tithing. Extravagant generosity includes sharing stories of joy and changed lives through the grace of giving. It is about teaching generosity and grace of giving through lessons of Scripture which strengthen and encourage people of all ages to serve God. The practice of extravagant generosity cultivates spiritual growth and builds a relationship with God. It will deepen faith, enrich prayer life, unite and build churches to have a clear purpose and mission. An extravagantly generous church will emphasizes mission, purpose and life-changing results instead of complaining about shortages, budgets and lack of resources. God moves people to find purpose and to accomplish things for Christ.  We should give because of the joy we have in the gift of Jesus Christ which God has given to us. Extravagant generosity means we give whatever we can, whenever we can so that we can excel in the grace of giving, as Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 8:7.

What conversations about faith and money have been the most helpful to you?

Pray: Dear God, you have given the world the greatest gift, your Son, Jesus Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit inspire me to have a generous heart, an open heart that I may be able to understand your purpose for me in the life of your Church. Amen
